Notes on assessment:

This standard is used for export certificates for animal and plant products. It used most widely by countries which export a lot of animal products (Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands). For example the Netherlands uses this standard for animal and plant exports on the https://www.clientexport.nl/en/ website. The resulting XML file can be sent to the receiving nation for provision of data concerning the export and its associated certificates. The standard provides considerable detail in spreadsheets as to both the syntax and the semantics. Nonetheless as one report states “several versions are used around the region”8 and as the reports from the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (https://www.ippc.int/en/ephyto/) show considerable work still needs to be done to obtain agreement to use Ecert internationally. The standard assumes plant and animal exports will be described using Latin names (plus colloquial names). There is no facility for interlinking with other vocabularies or standards which may be used to describe a product. First assessment made by Christopher Brewster.
