It inlcudes elements focusing on instruments that capture data, temporal and spatial characteristics of the data, and projects with which the dataset is associated. It is defined as a W3C XML Schema.

The DIF metadata model is compatible with the ISO 19115 metadata model.
While the DIF is compatible with ISO 19115, there is a feeling among some metadata providers that the DIF should be superseded by ISO 19115.
